Recently, the AVClub had a discussion of what was the “Yesterday” of today. It had to have a combination of popularity, lasting influence, and coverability. And in none of these discussions did Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” come up. Unfortunately for them it fits the criteria perfectly and they had to look to the comments section to find it.
Few songs in the post-CD world were as pervasive as this. The closest example I can think of, as I write this, is “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele, but it was nowhere near the level of this song. God knows if there will be such an example when you finally read this. Even my mom liked it, and she hates strings.
Next: A new band from Sheffield.
