OutKast – “Hey Ya”

When: January 2004
Where: Outside the Santa Anita Mall
Who: My mother
Weather: Cold, partly cloudy

What can I say about this song that hasn’t already been said? I’d like to talk about the year 2004 instead.

In the story of my life, 2004 was to be dominated by three overarching themes: my crush on Alex, someone else’s crush on me, and the beginning of High School. It might all seem very stressful, but taken one day at a time it wasn’t so ominous. Musically, the year is dominated by songs of blunt excitement, and “Hey Ya” is a prime example.

Next: The lowest point of the decade.
