Lou Bega – “Mambo No. 5”

When: 8 January 2000
Where: The TV Room
Who: Nobody
Weather: Cold and raining

This was a song for which there was no escape. In January of 2000, MadTV was using it to still make Monica Lewinsky jokes. A super-clean version with completely different lyrics was playing on Radio Disney, and an executive at Warner Brothers decided to have him host a run of Saturday Morning cartoon specials called “Snow Jam.” I checked with Chris Macquarrie who confirmed seeing the same thing, assuring me it wasn’t a strange, inexplicable dream.

But the oughts were upon us. The nightmare was only just beginning.

Next: 2000 proves to be an eclectic year with an offer from Beck.
